Our Story
Ecolurian is a Dutch company born from the vision of two brothers whose lifelong passion for art and craftsmanship naturally evolved into a pursuit of creating something truly meaningful.
What began as a shared fascination with textures, materials, and the beauty of nature grew into a mission: to unite artistic expression with ecological responsibility.
When we discovered the beauty and potential of kelp – one of the fastest-growing species in the Pacific Ocean – we knew we had found a material that unites our love for design with our respect for nature. Its patterns, colors, and natural elegance inspired us to develop a process that transforms kelp into refined, luxurious veneers.
Each piece we create is unique, shaped by the sea and crafted with care. Through Ecolurian, we bring this natural artistry into modern interiors, proving that ecological responsibility and sophisticated design can exist in perfect harmony.
Significant, sustainable and ecological surfaces for life.
We unite nature and design.
At Ecolurian, every creation reflects our passion for nature and dedication to exceptional craftsmanship.
We use only carefully selected materials, like Kelp algae, that not only elevate interiors but also contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions. Sustainability is not a choice – it is the foundation of everything we create.
Our location
Factory 1 is the tile plant at our company headquarters in Delfzijl, The Netherlands. It is also the beating heart of our company where we design, explore, develop and innovate. From here, we proceed with further laboratory tests.
Quality as a priority
Ecolurian is in pursuit of perfection. Every tile coming through the factory 1 is checked manually, and unless it is flawless it’s not leaving the facility. We want to satisfy our clients in at least 3 ways: high-quality products, excellent support and right communication.
THE JOURNEY OF ALGAE
From the sea to sophisticated interiors
Our kelp algae, carefully harvested from the Yellow Sea, begins its transformation long before it becomes part of an interior. Each strand is selected for its structure, color potential, and natural texture. Once collected, the algae enter a meticulous, multi-stage process designed to honor their organic origins and reveal their inherent beauty.
THE CONTROLLED TRANSFORMATION
After washing and drying, the material is cut into precise formats that serve as the foundation of its final visual expression.
The algae are then placed in a controlled environment where humidity, temperature, and light conditions are carefully regulated. This phase is essential: it allows the algae to develop their vibrant, characteristic tones — colors shaped by nature, perfected through scientific expertise.
THE ART OF FINISHING
When the material reaches its ideal state, each piece is pressed and veneered onto a stable base layer, ensuring durability and long-term performance.
The surfaces are then finished with a precision spray coating that protects the natural patterns while enhancing their depth, luster, and tactile qualities. The result is a unique, high-quality material: a fusion of craft, technology, and nature, created for refined, contemporary interiors.
The Story of Kelp
From Ocean Guardian to Sustainable Design
Kelp algae are more than marine plants — they are underwater forests that protect our planet. Growing at exceptional speed, kelp absorbs vast amounts of CO₂, helping purify the oceans and atmosphere. Unlike crops grown on land, kelp requires no soil, fresh water, or agricultural space. It relies solely on sunlight and the natural nutrients of the sea, making it one of the most renewable resources on Earth.
These vibrant sea forests support entire ecosystems, providing shelter and nourishment for marine life while stabilizing coastal environments. When harvested responsibly, kelp becomes an ecological material with minimal environmental impact and high regenerative capacity.
For Ecolurian, this remarkable natural strength becomes the foundation of AlgalTiles. Through a carefully developed process, kelp’s organic patterns, textures, and colors are preserved and transformed into refined, durable surfaces. Each tile captures the essence of its origin — the movement of the sea, the purity of the ocean, and the resilience of nature.
BAMBOO BASE
We chose the Bamboo board as a base of our tiles because Bamboo is an endless resource. It grows faster than any other plant on the earth.
Each year the 4-5 year stems are harvested, providing space for young Bamboo to grow maturity. Giant Bamboo is formally not a wood but grass.
It has excellent hardwood like characteristics: It is very hard, durable, water and moist resistant.
ECOLOGICAL GLUE
For our tiles, we only use high quality, non-toxic, ecological and environment-friendly glue.
When we were about to choose the right glue for our tiles the most important thing was that not only the product is ecological but that whole process of manufacture of the glue is environmentally sound.
COATING
Algal tiles are coated with an ecological high-performance solution which gives them higher resistance to water and dirt.
